Nothing Wrong With Me; Unless There Is

Now that was a classically ambiguous and contradictory statement wasn't it?

I don't feel comfortable talking about my health but since I started this I will finish it up as best I can. I had assumed I would go into the hospital for a while and that is why I told all of you what I knew so far about my health. It would explain why Fak wasn't submitting his articles.

On Friday I received a call from the health care center. It was from a long-time friend who worked the desk for the doctor and nurse practitioner. When she called, I knew there wasn't anything serious yet or it wouldn't be her making the call.

The blood tests weren't all done but some were and they wanted to let me know what they had found out so far.

On the good side was the fact my prostate was fine. They also said my liver and kidneys were sound but they showed signs of being pickled which I remedied immediately. Over the years I do everything in excess so when someone tells me to cut back on something I just go to the extreme and quit altogether. It's no big deal as when I need to lose a few pounds, a cutback in greasy burgers and a fasting from my beer and wine and I am back where I want to be weight-wise in a hurry.

I have an infection in my mastoid glands and the center called in a prescription for a medicine with a caveat. If I take the stuff on an empty stomach it could give me the slides. I advised that was no problem as everything I eat or drink gives me the slides and I haven't had an empty stomach in three decades. After three days I can tell you that if I ever get constipated I will ask for this drug as it has created a need for me to stock the bathroom with reading material and plenty of toilet paper.

Of course, the blood work ruled out the big diseases that I could have had and that is fine by me.

There are more test results coming and I hope to get them soon so I can tell my family what happened and that I am alright: or I am not. No sense telling people you don't know anything.

I have been talking to medical people I run into as well as spending a great deal of time diagnosing myself. All comments were off the record and given with a "maybe" included but it makes sense when coupled with my research.

It is likely I had what is called a TIA. A Transient Ischemic Attack occurs when a blood clot temporarily clogs an artery, and part of the brain doesn't get the blood it needs. The symptoms occur rapidly and last a relatively short time. Unlike stroke, when a TIA is over, there's no injury to the brain.

I like the fact there is no lasting damage but a TIA is a harbinger of possible things to come and I don't relish that idea. In about one third of the cases a larger stroke occurs within a few weeks or months of the TIA and I don't enjoy the idea of walking around with a time bomb in my noggin if in fact that is what happened to me.

So I will just sit and wait, on the toilet, for the next call of results and then I'm sure they will call me in to go over everything.

In a way I'm glad I had all the tests. It tells me at almost 61 I am as healthy as a horse save one thing which isn't and is serious enough to take seriously.

I think I will leave off here with another ambiguous and contradictory statement. The story of my life it seems.

Thanks Sue. All the tests are negative which is good unless a person really want to know what the heck happened and then they are bad.

Glad to hear you're O.K. (so far). But what I was really waiting to hear was how you did at the golf tournament. :)

A TIA is indeed a serious matter, Mike. But, it does not always mean the end.

My prayers are with you.

Thanks Ken. I was sure you would understand this fully. Just have to watch it a bit.
